On August 1^st, a caravan of several hundred Central American migrants, family members of disappeared migrants, and migrant rights activists arrived in Mexico City to denounce Mexican authorities for their indifference and lack of action to protect undocumented migrants from organized crime, kidnapping, sexual abuse and murder.

Named “Step by Step for Peace,” this caravan composed of citizens from Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Mexico left Guatemala on July 24^th, traveling primarily by freight train, known as “la bestia” [the beast], which is the preferred method of transport by many migrants heading to the United States or Canada.

The route through Mexico taken by migrants has increasingly become more dangerous as violence, insecurity and impunity related to the war with Mexican drug cartels escalates. Many migrants become targets of violence as cartels and organized crime seek to expand their operations into human smuggling, extortion, ransom and forced recruitment into the cartels themselves. In August of last year, one of the most feared cartels, Los Zetas, massacred a group of 72 Central and South American migrants in the state of Tamaulipas near the Mexico-US border.

This migrant caravan forms part of a broader and growing social movement within Mexico that is demanding structural and systemic changes to end the violence and impunity caused by the “War on Drugs”. In July, this movement, known as the “Movement for Peace with Justice and Dignity” set out an eight point national pact outlining some of the structural causes of violence, including: state corruption, policies of greater militarization, poverty, lack of education and opportunity for youth. The movement also proposed potential plans of action and strategies to find solutions and an end to the violence.

Roughly 200 participants in the caravan arrived to Mexico City’s main square, the Zocalo, and marched to the senate building, demanding audience of legislators and senators. Some chanted to the Mexican President: “Calderón entiende, no somos criminales, somos trabajadores internacionales!” [Calderón, listen! We are not criminals, we are international workers!]

On August 3^rd, several days after the arrival of the caravan, the National Institute of Migration (INM), the administrative body that handles migration in Mexico, issued 100 “humanitarian visas” to participants of the caravan as a result of public pressure and protest. International members of the caravan were demanding access and stay in the country so they could look for their missing loved ones.

A Triumph amongst the sadness:

“I now have triumphed in my search because thanks to God I have found my daughter here! . . . We are here precisely to find our children, because they have left Honduras in search of the “American Dream” and they get caught and channeled here [to Mexico]. According to my daughter she wasn’t allowed to continue on forward and so she became stuck here in Mexico City.”– María Munguía, Honduras

“We demand that they respect our children! Because they know that Mexico is only a country of transit , people are only crossing through, but sadly those people are ultimately the ones who suffer kidnappings and our children disappear . . . they are only looking for an “American Dream” but sadly they do not know that that “American Dream” turns out to only be a nightmare . . . We see now that the routes are much more difficult and that the majority of the youth that cross via freight train are the ones who are kidnapped the most and young women are being raped. We demand that the Mexican Authorities protect our children, because we are all human, and we all have a right to our life, people leave their countries to find a better life. In Honduras we don’t have much employment as the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.”

According to the National Commission on Human Rights in Mexico, there were over 20,000 kidnappings or abductions of undocumented migrants this year.

Family members of missing migrants brought placards, signs and photos of their missing loved ones to put face and names to the statistics.

Since April 15th, 2011, the indigenous community of Cherán, Michoacán has erected barricades and it's own form of community police in defense of it's community. They are confronting the violence that is being produced by narcos, paid by other communities that are illegally cutting down their forests. Those forests are necessary for the community of Cherán. El martes 1 de Marzo de 2011, una caravana de 70 miembros y sus familias de la Coalición de Trabajadores de Immokalee (CIW) llegaron al espacio colectivo y comunitario: 2640. Para reunirse y descansar con sus aliados y companerxs de la ciudad y puerto de Baltimore.

Con miembros de la organizacion Trabajdores Unidos, gente de la Alianza de Estudiantes con Campesinos, Lideres de la organizacion estudiantil , Proyecto de Algebra entre otras personas en solidaridad. Hubo una gran cena, concierto de hip hop y son jarocho.

La CIW, una organizacion de campesinos en Immokalee Fl, dirigido por sus miembros - en su mayor parte latinxs, haitianos y gente maya, - empezó una gira y caravana en Boston MA con una manifestación y mitin con mas de mil personas para exigir de las empresas de "comida fresca" (Publix, Stop and Shop, Trader Joes, Giant Foods) mejores condiciones y salarios para lxs trabajadorxs que cosechan la jitomate en los campos de Immokalee Fl.

La organizacion tiene mas de diez años luchando por derechos humanos con sus campañas de "Comida Justa" y en contra de la industria de comida rápida que han permitido la explotación y condiciones de esclavitud a lxs trabajadxres.
La CIW ha hecho victorias en contra de las empresas conocidas como Taco Bell, McDonalds, Burger King, Subway, Chipotle etc. con la demanda de "un centavo mas por libra de jitomate". Detrás de esas campañas es un proceso de la organizacion de empoderar sus trabajdorxs, para cosechar el liderazgo sin lideres.

Después del descanso en Baltimore, la caravana se fue al sede de Giant Foods en Landover MD para protestar y después tiene una parada en Atlanta GA en donde las oficinas de Publix están ubicadas. Van a terminar la gira este sábado con una mega-marcha en frente unas tiendas de Publix en Tampa FL.

"A Native of Montevideo, Uruguay, Raul Zibechi became a militant of the Frente Estudiantil Revolucionario (FER) in the 70’s. In the 80’s he began his publishing career, writing articles for newspapers and magazines. Zibechi focused his writing on social movements in Latin America. He won the Premio José Martí de Periodismo, a prestigious prize given to journalists, for his writing on the Argentine social movement following the insurrection on the 19th and 20th of December 2001. Since beginning his writing career in the mid 80’s, he has collaborated on training and outreach work with movements including urban movements in Argentina, peasants movements in Paraguay and indigenous movements in Bolivia, Peru, Chile and Colombia. State government officials are planning construction of a new $104 million juvenile detentioncenter. This is a proposal moving forward when Baltimore City youth are facining a failing andunderfunded public education system - in which officials state there is a lack in resources andfunding - , the closing of public after-school and community youth programs, as well as anincrease in job precarity and youth incarceration.

However, the planned youth prison is not going unnoticed, a coalition of groups and individuals are moving to resist the development of the jail, as well as build community leadership and participation. Youth led groups such as Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle and the Baltimore Algebra Project were at the front of a march and rally held this past Oct. 31st, which brought the several hundred participants to the site of the youth jail (next to the existing youth and adult detention facilities), in which members of both organizations among other supporters engagedin civil disobedience by bolt-cutting and tearing down the locked gate surrounding the site. Theyplanted signs and placed books on the ground chanting "educate, not incarcerate!". The police however remained off to the side in unmarked vehicles and did not arrest.

Oficiales del estado están planeando la construcción de un nuevo centro de detención para los jóvenes en la ciudad de Baltimore, que va a costar $104 millones. Este es una propuesta en un proceso rapido, cuando hay un sistema de educación publica en crisis, que falta bastante recursos básicos y fondos necesarios. También hay menos programas después de clases, menos programas publicas para los jóvenes, y una precariedad de empleo además del crecimiento de las detenciones de jóvenes en la ciudad.

Sin embargo, el centro de detención planeado no esta pasando desapercibido, una coalición de grupos y individuos están moviéndose a resistir el desarrollo de la cárcel, además de construir mas participación de la comunidad. Grupos dirigidos por los jóvenes como los Lideres de una Lucha Linda (Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle) o el Proyecto de Algebra (Algebra Project) estaban en el frente de una marcha y mitin que paso el 31 de oct. con cientos de participantes, en frente del sitio de la cárcel planeado (al lado de los centros de detención para los adultos y jóvenes que ya existen). Miembros de ambas organizaciones y otrxs participaban en desobediencia civil, cuando cortaron las cerraduras de la puerta y destruyeron las rejas alrededor del sitio. Ellxs plantearon signos y pasaron libros en el suelo, gritando "Educar, no encarcelar!", pero la policía estaba afuera en sus caros sin marcas y no hacían detenciones.

San Juan Copala es un pueblo ubicada en la región Triqui en Oaxaca, México. Un grupo indígena con una historia profunda de resistiendo colonalización y opresión de parte de los gobiernos y sus grupos paramilitares. En 2006, con la ola de la otra campaña y el movimiento en Oaxaca con la APPO, seccion 22 de SNTE y otras, San Juan Copala anuncio su autonomía. La respuesta del gobierno fue una aumentacion y apoyo a un grupo paramilitar - Unidad de Bienestar Social de la Región Triqui (UBISORT). Eso grupo, esta usando matanzas, amenazas, secuestros, y hace mucho tiempo ha asediado a la comunidad de San Juan Copala.

27 de Abril, una caravana de derechos humanos se componía por activistas de la Asamblea Popular de los Pueblos de Oaxaca (APPO), Seccion 22 de SNTE, Centro de Apoyo Comunitario Trabajando Unidos (CACTUS), Voces Oaxaqueñas Construyendo Autonomía y Libertad (VOCAL), periodistas de la revista mexicana Contralinea, también compañer@s internacionales de Finlandia, Italia, Alemana, Bélgica - intentaba a llegar a la comunidad con provisiones básicas, pero estaban atacados por UBISORT.

Una activista respetada y conocida de CACTUS - Bety Cariño, y una activista Finlandés - Juri Jaakkola, estuvieron asasinatos. Otras estuvieron secuestrados, desaparecidos y heridos.

San Juan Copala is a town in the Triqui region of Oaxaca, Mexico. An indigenous group with a deep history of resistance to colonization and government and paramilitary oppression. In 2006 with the wave of the other campaign and the Oaxacan movement with the APPO and section 22 of the Teachers Union among other groups, San Juan Copala announced it's autonomy. The response from the government was to augment and support the paramilitary group Unity for the Social Well-being of the Triqui Region (UBISORT in Spanish). That group is using murders, kidnappings, threats and violence and as of some time has besieged the community of San Juan Copala.

April 27th a human rights caravan composed of members from the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO in Spanish), Center of Communal Support Working Together (CACTUS in Spanish), Oaxacan Voices building Autonomy and Liberty (VOCAL in Spanish), Section 22 of the Teachers Union, reporters from the Mexican Magazine - Contralinea, and internationals from Belgium, Italy, Finland and Germany - attempted to arrive to the besieged community with basic supplies and provisions, but was attacked by UBISORT

A respected and known activist from CACTUS - Bety Cariño, and a Finnish activist - Juri Jaakkola, were both assasinated. Others were kidnapped, dissapeared or injured.

Cuatro días después de la <Huelga Política Nacional>, el Sindicato Mexicano de Electricistas (SME), hizo una marcha se llama "Marcha por la paz y el empleo" - mas de algunas miles de trabajadores estuvieron en la marcha exigiendo un alto a la represión de la Policía Federal (PF) y por la reinstalacion de los y las trabajadores a sus lugares de trabajo. Estas reclamas, vienen despues de represiones de la PF contra trabajadores que iniciaron plantones en frente instalaciones de LyFC. Hubieron enfrentamientos entre la PF y trabajadores en algunas estados cuando la PF ha intentado desalojar los y las trabajadores de las instalaciones. Algunas se fueron heridos y un recibió un balazo de la PF.

Four days after the <Political National Strike>, the Mexican Electricians Union (SME in Spanish), had a march called "March for peace and employment" - More than some thousands of workers where in the march demanding a halt to the repression of the Federal Police (PF in Spanish) and for the reinstatement of the workers to their places of work. These demands, came after PF repression against the workers when they initiated blockades in front of the LyFC installations. There were confrontations between the PF and workers in different states when the PF attempted (in some cases accomplished) the eviction of those blockades. Some workers were left injured and one recieved a bullet from the PF.

Oventic esta en los altos de Chiapas y es territorio autonomo de las Zapatistas. Se llama tambien, Caracol no. II de la Resistencia y Rebeldía por la Humanidad, un sitio de la politica y cultura de las Zapatistas que son de los grupos indigenas - Tzotziles y Tzetales. Ahi esta la Junta del Buen Gobierno "Corazón Céntrico Delante del Mundo" - la forma de autoridad y politica entre las comunidades Zapatistas, cooperativas de artesania, comedores, el Centro de Español y Lenguas Mayas Rebelde Autónomo Zapatista (CELMRAZ), y la unica escuela secondaria entre todas las comunidades Zapatistas se llama - Escuela Secundaria Rebelde autónoma Zapatista (ESRAZ).

I am in Oventic, Chiapas for 5 weeks untill March 11th. I will upload photos, audio and put more information in a few weeks because more times than not, there is no internet access.

Oventic is in the Chiapan Highlands and is autonomous territory of the Zapatistas. It is also called Caracol no. II of resistance and rebellion for humanity, it is a political and cultural site of the Zapatistas of this region of Chiapas, mostly of the Tzotzil and Tzetal indigenous groups. In Oventic there is the Junta del Buen Gobierno-Central heart before the world - the political and authority body of the Zapatistas, artesenal cooperatives, dining halls, The Castellano and Mayan Rebel and Autonomous Indigenous Language Center (CELMRAZ in Castellano), and the only secoundary school among the Zapatista communities called the Rebel Autonomous Zapatista Secondary School (ESRAZ in Castellano)

A compañero from my classes in the CEPE part of the UNAM (Méxicos largest university), a person incredible and compassionate, named Badeau from Haiti lost 13 of his closer family members. His mother and younger brother were the only to survive. We had bought a plane ticket for him to return to Domincan Republic and to take a bus to the Haitian border to be with his family, but he and his family obviously need more money.

Playa Ventanilla es una playa virgen en la costa de Oaxaca México, ahi alguien puede encontrar cocodriles, iguanas, turtugas y sus hijos, cielos infinitos, atardeceres de todos colores, olas tubas...paraiso es la verda...pero alguien puede encontrar los cuerpos de barcos o en este caso un avión.

Los dos hombres descansando en la ala nos dijeron...hace unos años el ejerecito mexicano disparó y chocó el avión en el medio dia, un avión de narcotraficantes. El avión se cayó en la playa, los narcos huyeron a la selva de la laguna cerca, y los "autoridades" encontraron el avión llena de cocaina, billetes americanos, y armas. Supuestemente Ventanilla y las playas cerca son partes de las rutas do los narcos contrabandeando. Hay las ruinas de barcos, y otros medios de transportacion en Ventanilla y cerca.

Ventanilla Beach is a virgen beach on the Oaxacan coast in México, there you can find crocodiles, iguanas, turtles and their children, infinite skies, sunsets of all colors, tubular waves...truly a paradise....but also you can find the bodies of boats and in this case a plane.

The two men resting on the wing told us...a few years ago the Mexican Army shot and crashed a Narcotrafficers plane. The plane crashed on the beach and the narcos escaped into the jungle close to a nearby lagoon, the "authorities" found the plane filled with cocaine, american cash, and weapons. Supposedly Ventanilla and the sorounding beaches are points in the routes of the narcos smuggling. There are runins of boats and other means of transport in Ventanilla and nearby.

The barricade of the workers in the Lecheria

Since november 7th the workers of the former LyFC electric plant called TurboGas in the Lecheria (industrial zone north of México City) have been occupying a barricade at the gates of plant. On December 15th they faced aggression by roughly 300 armed elements of the federal police, not seeking to forcefully evict them, but to take parts, machinery, equipment and tools of the facilities for other electric plants now operated by the CFE. The federales destroyed a smaller un-occupied barricade at a smaller entrance of the facilities so they could enter and take the materials. Inside the facilities federal police, city police and security have maintained a presence, mostly as a way to maintain the intimidation toward the workers.

When the workers of SME and LyFC learned that the government was removing the equipment, machinery, and tools of their labor from their facilities, the Central Committee of SME put a call for workers to passively resist. Those of the Lecheria decided to errect a permanent barricade to restrict the entrance of the Federal Government and CFE from taking the materials of their labor. The Central Committee put a call for the dismantlement of the barricade, viewing it as an agression, but those of the Lecheria autonomously decided to maintain the barricade as a necessity and unique form of their resistance.

Many of them told us that they have never been involved with political movements prior, or that they have had any history of taking actions such as those they are taking now, but their radicalization has been, of sorts, the necessity they feel they need to have to resist and survive the oppression and expereinces they are enduring now.

They were kind to allow us to pass the night with them and to share their stories with us. Will post the audio of their voices, stories and messages within the next days.

Desde el 7 de noviembre los/las trabajadores del antiguo LyFC planta electric se llama TurboGas en la Lecheria (zona industrial norte de la ciudad de México) han estado ocupando una barricada en frente las verjas/puertas de la instalación. En 15 de diciembre ellos se enfrentaron la agresión de aproximamente 300 elementos armados de la Policia Federal, quien no quisieron los desalojaron a los trabajadores, pero al mejor quitar los partes, equipo, herramientos, y maquinas de la instalaciones para las otras plantas electricas del CFE. Los federales destruyeron una barricada mas pequeña y desocupado ubicada en una entrada mas pequeña de la instalación para pueden entrar y quitar el equipo. Adentro la instalación policia federal, policia estatal, y vigilancia han mantenido una presencia, sobre todo ser una manera mantener la intimidación a las/los trabajadores.

Cuando las/los trabajadores de SME y LyFC aprendieron que el gobierno ha quitando el equipo, maquinas, y herramientos de su trabajo, el comite central de SME hizo una llamada para las/los trabajadores resistir pasivamente. Ellas/os de Lecheria dicidieron leventar una barricada permanente restrictir la entrada del gobierno federal y CFE toman las materiales de su trabajo. El comite central hizo una llamada por la desmantelando de la barricada, la veindo como agresión, pero ellos de la Lecheria dicidieron de la forma autonoma mantener la barricada como una necesitad y forma unica de su resistencia.

Muchos de ellos nos dijeron que nunca han participado en movimientos politicales antes, ni han tenido una historia de haciendo acciones, como las acciones que estan haciendo ahorita. su radicalizacion ha sido, de ciertos modos, la necesidad tener que resistir y sobrevivier la opression y experiencia que esten soportando ahora.

Estuvieron muy amable por nos permitiendo pasar toda la noche en su barricada y por compartiendo sus historias, cuentos y leche de arroz. Buena/os Onda/os. Audio venir.

La Chilena - A variety of music born on the coastlines in the southern states of Oaxaca and Guerrero. It has it's roots in the music brought by Peruvian and Chilean sailors and mariners. It then mixed with the styles and cultures of the different ethnic groups of the region - Mixtecos, Afromestizas, Amuzgos, Chatinos.

The music is a sone (folkloric music) with a vocalist, saxophone, trumpet, tuba, rythem section, and fast 6/8 tempo. They sing about everything from the geography to love to butterflies. There is much dancing and costumes.

Son Jarocho - A variety of music born out of the state of Veracruz (Jarocho is a reference to the culture of Veracruz). It is a mixture of poetry and zapateado (a form of dance with a lot of stomp). They use several jaranas (tiny guitar), harp, upright bass, cow jaw (for rythem). They often sing about "justicias" or social justice, but at times "birds" and love.

SME y grupos en solidaridad dicidieron que habrá una toma de la ciudad (D.F) en 4 de diciembre, una referencia al día, en 1914, cuando Emiliano Zapata y Francisco Villa (heroes folkloricas de la Revolución Mexicana) acordaron ocupar y tomar la ciudad de México durante la Revolución Mexicana. Tambien habrán movilaciones en 14 de diciembre, el 95 aniversario de SME.

SME and groups in solidarity, decided that there will be a take of the city (D.F.) on December 4th, a reference to the day, in 1914, when Emiliano Zapata and Francisco Villa (Folk Heros of the Mexican Revolution) agreed to occupy and take México City during the Mexican Revolution. Also there will be mobilizations on December 14th, the 95th anniversary of SME.
